妙法蓮華経 観世音菩薩普門品 第二十五
みょうほうれんげきょう かんぜおんぼさつふもんほん だいにじゅうご
MYO HO REN GE KYO KAN ZE ON BO SA FU MON BON DAI NI JU GO

爾時。無盡意菩薩。即従座起。偏袒右肩。
にじ むじんにぼさつ  そくじゅうざき  へんだんうけん 
NI JI MU JIN NI BO SA TSU SO KU JÛ ZA KI HEN DA NU KEN
At that time the bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent immediately rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder,

合掌向佛。而作是言。
がっしょうこうぶつ にさぜごん   
GAS-SHÔ KÔ BU TSU NI SA ZE GON
pressed his palms together and, facing the Buddha, spoke these words:

世尊。観世音菩薩。以何因縁。名観世音。
せそん  かんぜおんぼさつ いがいんねん みょうかんぜおん
SE SON KANZEON BOSATSU I GA IN NEN MYÔ KAN ZE ON
World Honored One, this Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds-- why is he called Perceiver of the World's Sounds?

佛告無盡意菩薩。
ぶつごうむじんにぼさつ 
BU TSU GÔ MU JIN NI BO SA TSU
The Buddha said to Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent:

善男子。 若有無量百千萬億衆生。 受諸苦惱。
ぜんなんし にゃくうむりょうひゃくせんまんのくしゅうじょう じゅじょくのう
ZEN NAN SHI NYAKÛ MU RYÔ HYA KU SEN MAN NO KU SHÛJÔ JU JO KU NÔ
Good man, suppose there are immeasurable hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, millions of living beings who are undergoing various trials and suffering.

聞是観音菩薩。 一心稱名。  観世音菩薩。
もんぜかんおんぼさつ いっしんしょうみょう かんぜおんぼさつ
MON ZE KA NON BO SA TSU IS SHIN SHÔ MYÔ KAN ZE ON BO SA TSU
即時観其音聲。
そくじかんごおんじょう 
SO KU JI KAN GO ON JÔ
If they hear of this Bodhisattva Perceiver of the Word's Sounds and single-mindedly call his name, then at once he will perceive the sound of their voices

皆得解脱。
かいとくげだつ
KAI TO KU GE DA TSU
and they will all gain deliverance from their trials.

若有持是観世音菩薩名者。設入大火。火不能焼。
にゃくうじぜかんぜおんぼさつみょうしゃ せつにゅうだいか かふのうしょう
NYAKU U JI ZE KAN ZE ON BO SA TSU MYÔ SHA SE TSU NYÛ DAI KA KA FUN Ô SHÔ
If someone, holding fast to the name of bodhisattva perceiver of the world's sounds, should enter a great fire, the fire could not burn him.

由是菩薩 威神力故。
 ゆぜぼさついじんりきこ 
YU ZE BO SA TSU I JIN RI KI KO
This would come about because of this bodhisattva's authority and supernatural power.

若為大水所漂。稱其名號。即得淺處。
にゃくいだいすいしょひょう しょうごみょうごう そくとくせんしょ
NYA KU I DAI SUI SHOH YÔ SHÔ GO MYÔ GÔ SO KU TO KU SEN SHO
If one were washed away by a great flood and call upon his name, one would immediately find himself in a shallow place.

若有百千萬億衆生。
 にゃくうひゃくせんまんのくじゅじょう
NYAKU U HYA KU SEN MAN NO KU JU JÔ
為求金。銀。瑠璃。。碼碯。珊瑚。琥珀。
いぐこん ごん るり しゃこ めのう さんご こはく
IGUKON GON RURI SHAKO MENÔ SANGO KOHAKU
眞珠等寶。入於大海。。
しんじゅとうほう にゅうおたいかい 
SHIN JU TÔ HÔ NYÛ O TAI KAI
Suppose there were a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, a million living beings who, seeking for gold, silver, lapis lazuli, seashell, agate, coral, amber, pearls, and other treasures, set out on the great sea.


假使黒風吹其船舫 。 飄堕羅刹鬼國。 其中若有乃至一人。
けしこくふうすいごぜんぽう ひょうだらせつきこく ごちゅうにゃくうないしいちにん
KE SHI KO KU FÛ SUI GO ZEN PÔ HYÔ DA RA SE TSU KI KO KU GO CHÛ NYAKU U NAI SHI I CHI NIN
稱観世音菩薩名者。是諸人等。皆得解脱羅刹之難。
しょうかんぜおんぼさつみょうしゃ ぜしょにんとう かいとくげだつらせつしなん
SHÔ KAN ZE ON BO SA TSU MYÔ SHA ZE SHO NIN TÔ KAI TO KU GE DA TSU RA SE TSU SHIN AN
and suppose a fierce wind should blow their ship off course and it drifted to the land of rakshasas demons. If among those people there is even just one who calls the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's sounds, then all those people will be delivered from their troubles with the rakshasas.

以是因縁。名観世音。
いぜいんねん みょうかんぜおん
I ZE IN NEN MYÔ KAN ZE ON
This is why he is called Perceiver of the World's Sounds.

若復有人。臨當被害。稱観世音菩薩名者。
にゃくぶうにん りんとうひがい しょうかんぜおんぼさつみょうしゃ
NYA KU BÛ NIN RIN TÔ HI GAI SHÔ KAN ZE ON BO SA TSU MYÔ SHA
If a person who faces imminent threat of attack should call the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's sounds,

彼所執刀杖。尋段段壞。而得解脱。
ひしょしゅうとうじょう じんだんだんえ にとくげだつ
HI SHO SHÛ TÔ JÔ JIN DAN DAN E NI TO KU GE DA TSU
then the swords and staves wielded by his attackers would instantly shatter into so many pieces and he would be delivered.

若三千大千國土滿中。夜叉羅刹。欲來惱人。
にゃくさんぜんだいせんこくどまんちゅう やしゃらせつ よくらいのうにん
NYA KU SAN ZEN DAI SEN KO KU DO MAN CHÛ YA SHA RA SET SU YO KU RAI NÔ NIN
Thought enough yakshas and rakshasas to fill all the thousand-million-fold world should try to come and torment a person,

聞其稱観世音菩薩名者。是諸惡鬼。
もんごしょうかんぜおんぼさつみょうしゃ ぜしょあっき
MON GO SHÔ KAN ZE ON BO SA TSU MYÔ SHA ZE SHO AKKI
if they hear him calling the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds,

尚不能以 惡眼視之。況復加害。
しょうふのういあくげんじし きょうぶかがい 
SHÔ FU NÔ I AKU GEN JISHI KYÔ BU KA GAI 
then these evil demons will not even be able to look at him with their evil eyes, much less do him harm.

設復有人。若有罪。若無罪。忸械枷鎖。檢繋其身。
せつぶうにん にゃくうざい にゃくむざい ちゅうかいかさ けんげごしん 
SETSU BÛ NIN NYAKÛ ZAI NYAKU MU ZAI CHÛ KAI KA SA KEN GE GO SHIN
If a person, whether guilty or not, who has been put in stocks or bound with chains

稱観世音菩薩名者。皆悉斷壞 即得解脱。
しょうかんぜおんぼさつみょうしゃ かいしつだんえそくとくげだつ
 SHÔ KANZEON BOSATSU MYÔ SHA KAI SHI TSU DAN ESOKU TOKU GEDATSU
calls out the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, his fetters will break apart and he will immediately be freed.

若三千大千國土滿中怨賊。有一商主。將諸商人。齎持重寶。經過險路。 其中一人。作是唱言。
にゃくさんぜんだいせんこくどまんちゅうおんぞく ういちしょうしゅ しょうしょしょうにん さいじじゅうほう きょうかけんろ ごちゅういちにん さぜしょうごん
NYA KU SAN ZEN DAI SEN KOKU DO MAN CHÛ ON ZOKU U ICHI SHÔ SHU SHÔ SHO SHÔ NIN SAI JI JÛ HÔ KYÔ KA KEN RO GO CHÛ ICHI NIN SA ZE SHÔ GON
Suppose, in a place filled with all the evil-hearted bandits of the thousand-million-fold world, there is a merchant leader who is guiding a band of merchants carrying valuable treasures over a steep and dangerous road, and that one man shouts out these words:

諸善男子。勿得恐怖。汝等應當一心稱観世音菩薩名號。
しょぜんなんし もっとくくふ にょうとうおうとういっしんしょうかんぜおんぼさつみょうごう
SHO ZEN NAN SHI MOTTO KU KU FU NYÔ TÔ Ô TÔ ISSHIN SHÔ KANZEON BOSATSU MYÔ GÔ
Good men, do not be afraid! You must single-mindedly call on the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds.

是菩薩。能以無畏。施於衆生。
ぜぼさつ のういむい せおしゅじょう
ZE BOSATSU NÔ I MUI SE OSHU JÔ
This bodhisattva can grant fearlessness to living beings.

汝等若稱名者。於此怨賊。當得解脱。
にょうとうにゃくしょうみょうしゃ おしおんぞく とうとくげだつ
NYÔ TÔ NYAKU SHÔ MYÔ SHA O SHI ON ZOKU TÔ TO KU GEDATSU
If you call his name, you will be delivered from these evil-hearted bandits!'

衆商人聞。倶發聲言。南無観世音菩薩。
しゅしょうにんもん ぐほっしょうごん なむかんぜおんぼさつ 
SHU SHÔ NIN MON GU HOSSHÔ GON NAMU KANZEON BOSATSU 
When the band if merchants hear this, they all together raise their voices, saying, 'Hail to the Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds!'

稱其名故。即得解脱。
しょうおごみょうこ そくとくげだつ 
SHÔ O GO MYÔ KO SOKU TOKU GEDATSU
And because they call his name, they are at once able to gain deliverance.

無盡意。観世音菩薩摩訶薩。威神之力。巍巍如是。
むじんに かんぜおんぼさつまかさつ いじんしりき ぎぎにょぜ
MU JIN NI KANZEON BOSATSU MA KA SATSU I JIN SHI RIKI GI GIN YO ZE
Inexhaustible Intent, the authority and supernatural power of the Bodhisattva and mahasattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds are as mighty as this!

若有衆生。多於婬欲。常念恭敬 観世音菩薩。
にゃくうしゅじょう たおいんよく じょうねんくぎょうかんぜおんぼさつ
NYAKU USHU JÔ TA O IN YOKU JÔ NEN KU GYÔ KANZEON BOSATSU
If there should be living beings beset by numerous lusts and cravings, let them think with constant reverence of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds and then they can shed their desires.

若多瞋恚。常念恭敬。観世音菩薩。便得離瞋。
にゃくたしんに。じょうねんくぎょう。かんぜおんぼさ。べんとくりしん。
NYA KU TA SHIN NI JÔ NEN KU GYÔ KANZEON BOSATSU BEN TO KU RI SHIN
If they have great wrath and ire, let them think with constant reverence of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds and then they can shed their ire.

若多愚癡。 常念恭敬 観世音菩薩。便得離癡。
にゃくたぐち じょうねんくぎょうかんぜおんぼさつ べんとくりち 
NYAKU TA GUCHI JÔ NEN KU GYÔ KANZEON BOSATSU BEN TO KU RI CHI 
If they have great ignorance and stupidity, let them think with constant reverence of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds and they can rid themselves of stupidity.

無盡意。観世音菩薩。有如是等大威神力。多所饒益。
むじんに かんぜおんぼさつ うにょぜとうどうだいいじんりき たしょにょうやく
MU JIN NI KANZEON BOSATSU U NYO ZE TÔ DÔ DAI I JIN RIKI TA SHO NYÔ YAKU 
Inexhaustible Intent, the Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds possesses great authority and supernatural powers, as I have described, and can confer many benefits.

故是衆生。常應心念。
 ぜこしゅじょう じょうおうしんねん
ZE KO SHU JÔ JÔ O USHIN NEN
For this reason, living beings should constantly keep the thought of him in mind.

若有女人。設欲求男。禮拜供養観世音菩薩。便生福徳智慧之男。
にゃくうにょにん せっちょくぐなん らいはいくようかんぜおんぼさつ べんしょうふくとくちえしなん
NYA KU U NYO NIN SECCHO KU GU NAN RAI HAI KU YÔ KANZEON BOSATSU BEN SHÔ FU KU TO KU CHIE SHI NAN
If a woman wishes to give birth to a male child, she should offer obeisance and alms to Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds and then she will bear a son blessed with merit, virtue, and wisdom.

設欲求女。便生端正有相之女。宿植徳本。衆人愛敬。
 せっちょくぐにょ べんしょうたんしょう うそうしにょ ぢゅくじきとくほん じゅにんあいぎょう
 SECCHO KU GU NYO BEN SHÔ TAN SHÔ U SÔ SHIN YO JUKU JIKI TOKU HON JU NIN AI GYÔ
And if she wishes to bear a daughter, she will bear one with all the marks of comeliness, one who in the past planted the roots of virtue and is loved and respected by many persons.

無盡意。観世音菩薩。有如是力。
むじんに かんぜおんぼさつ うにょぜりき
MU JIN NI KANZEON BOSATSU U NYO ZE RIKI
Inexhaustible Intent, the Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds has power to do all this.

若有衆生 恭敬禮拜 観世音菩薩。福不唐捐。
 にゃくうしゅじょうくぎょうらいはいかんぜおんぼさつ ふくふとうえん
 NYA KÛ SHU JÔ KU GYÔ RAI HAI KANZEON BOSATSU FU KU FU TÔ EN
If there are living beings who pay respect and obeisance to Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, their good fortune will not be fleeting or vain.

是故衆生。皆應受持 観世音菩薩名號。
 ぜこしゅじょう かいおうじゅじかんぜおんぼさつみょうごう
 ZE KO SHU JÔ KA IÔ JU JI KANZEON BOSATSU MYÔ GÔ
Therefore living beings should all accept and uphold the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds.

無盡意。若有人。受持 六十二億恒河沙菩薩名字。
 むじんに にゃくうにん じゅじろくじゅうにおくごうかしゃぼさつみょうじ 
 MU JIN NI NYA KU U NIN JU JI ROKU JÛ NI OKU GÔ KA SHA BOSATSU MYÔ JI
Inexhaustible Intent, suppose there is a person who accepts and upholds the names of as many bodhisattvas as there are sands in sixty-two million Ganges,

復尽形供養。飲食衣服。臥具医薬。 (2nd Version 復盡形供養。飲食。衣服。臥具。醫藥。)
ぶじんぎょうくよう おんじき えぷく がぐ いやく
 BU JIN GYÔ KU YÔ ON JIKI E PU KU GAGU I YA KU
and for as long as his present body lasts, he offers them alms in the form of food and drink, clothing, bedding and medicines.

於汝意云何。是善男子。善女人功徳多不。
おにょういうんが ぜぜんなんし ぜんにょにん くどくたふ
O NYO IUNGA ZE ZEN NAN SHI ZEN NYO NIN KU DO KU TA FU 
What is your opinion? Would this good man or good woman gain many benefits or would he not?

無尽意言。甚多世尊。佛言
むじんにごん じんた せそん ぶつごん
MU JIN NI GON JIN TA SE SON BUTSU GON
Inexhaustible Intent replied, They would be very many, World-Honored One. The Buddha said:

若復有人。受持観世音菩薩名号。乃至一時。礼拝供養。
にゃくぶうにん じゅじかんぜおんぼさみょうごう ないしいちじ れいはいくよう 
NYA KU BÛ NIN JU JI KANZEON BOSATSU MYÔ GÔ NAI SHI ICHI JI RAI HAI KU YÔ
Suppose also that there is a person who accepts and upholds the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds and even just once offers him obeisance and alms.

是二人福 正等無異。於百千萬億劫。不可窮盡 (尽)。
ぜににんふく しょうとうむい おひゃくせんまんのくこう ふかぐうじん
ZE NI NIN FUKU SHÔ TÔ MUI O HYAKU SEN MAN NOKU KÔ FU KA GÛ JIN
The good fortune pained by these two persons would be exactly equal and without difference. For a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, a million kalpas it would never be exhausted or run out.

無尽意。受持観世音菩薩名号。得如是 無量無辺(or 邊) 。福徳之利。
むじんに じゅじかんぜおんぼさみょうごう むりょうむへん とくにょぜ ふくとくしり
MU JIN NI JU JI KANZEON BOSATSU MYÔ GÔ TO KU NYO ZE MURYÔMUHEN FUKUTOKUSHIRI
Inexhaustible Intent, if one accepts and upholds the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, he will gain the benefit of merit and virtue that is as immeasurable and boundless as this!

無盡意菩薩。白佛言。世尊。観世音菩薩。
むじんにぼさつ びゃくぶつごん せそん かんぜおんぼさつ
MU JIN NI BOSATSU BYAKU BUTSU GON SE SON KANZEON BOSATSU
云何遊此娑婆世界。云何而為衆生説法。
うんがゆうししゃばせかい うんがにいしゅじょうせっぽう 
UN GA YÛ SHI SHA BA SEKAI UN GA NI ISHU JÔ SEPPÔ 
Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent said to the Buddha,World-Honored One, Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds-- how does he come and go in this saha world? How does he preach the Law for the sake of living beings?

方便之力。其事云何。
ほうべんしりき ごじうんが
HÔ BEN SHI RIKI GO JI UN GA
How does the power of expedient means apply in this case?

佛告無盡意菩薩。
 ぶつごうむじんにぼさつ 
BUTSU GÔ MU JIN NI BOSATSU
The Buddha said to Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent:

善男子。若有國土衆生。應以佛身得度者。
ぜんなんし にゃくうこくどしゅじょう おういぶっしんとくどしゃ
ZEN NAN SHI NYAKÛ KOKU DO SHU JÔ O UIBUSSHIN TOKU DOSHA
Good man, if there are living beings in the land who need someone in the body of a Buddha in order to be saved,

観世音菩薩。即現佛身。而為説法。
 かんぜおんぼさつ そくげんぶっしん にいせっぽう
 KANZEON BOSATSU SOKU GEN BUSSHIN NI I SEPPÔ
Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds immediately manifests himself in a Buddha body and preaches the Law for them.

應以辟支佛身得度者。即現辟支佛身。而為説法。
おういびゃくしぶっしんとくどしゃ そくげんびゃくしぶっしん にいせっぽう
Ô I BYA KU SHI BUSSHIN TO KU DO SHA SOKU GEN BYAKU SHI BUSSHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need someone in a pratyekabuddha's body in order to be saved, immediately he manifests a pratyekabuddha's body and preaches the Law to them.

應以聲聞身 得度者。即現聲聞身。而為説法。
おういしょうもんしんとくどしゃ そくげんしょうもんしん にいせっぽう
Ô ISHÔ MON SHIN TO KU DO SHA SO KU GEN SHÔ MON SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If the need a voice-hearer to be saved, immediately he becomes a voice-hearer and preaches the Law for them.

應以梵王身 得度者。即現梵王身。而為説法。
おういぼんのうしんとくどしゃ そくげんぼんのうしん にいせっぽう
Ô I BONNÔ SHIN TO KU DO SHA SO KU GEN BON NÔ SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need King Brahma to be saved, immediately he becomes King Brahma and preaches the Law for them.

應以帝釈身 得度者。即現帝釈身。而以説法。
おういたいしゃくしんとくどしゃ そくげんたいしゃくしん にいせっぽう
Ô I TAI SHAKU SHIN TOKU DO SHA SO KU GEN TAI SHA KU SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need the lord Shakra to be saved, immediately he becomes the lord Shakra and preaches the Law for them.

應以自在天身得度者。即現自在天身而為説法。
おういじざいてんしんとくどしゃ そくげんじざいてんしんにいせっぽう
Ô I JI ZAITEN SHIN TO KU DO SHA SOKU GEN JI ZAI TEN SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need the heavenly beiang Freedom to be saved, immediately he becomes the heavenly being Freedom and preaches the Law for them.

應以大自在天身得度者。即現大自在天身。而為説法。
おういだいじざいてんしんとくどしゃ そくげんだいじざいてんしん にいせっぽう
Ô I DAI JI ZAI TEN SHIN TO KU DO SHA SO KU GEN DAI JI ZAI TEN SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they must be saved by someone in the body of the Great God of Sovereignty, he will manifest in the body of the Great God of Sovereignty and speak Dharma for them.

應以天大將軍身得度者。即現天大將軍身。而為説法。
おういてんだいしょうぐんしんとくどしゃ そくげんてんだいしょうぐんしん にいせっぽう
Ô I TEN DAI SHÔ GUN SHIN TO KU DO SHA SO KU GEN TEN DAI SHÔ GUN SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need a great general of heaven to be saved, immediately he becomes a great general of heaven and preaches the Law for them.

應以毘沙門身 得度者。即現毘沙門身。而為説法。
おういびしゃもんしんとくどしゃ そくげんびしゃもんしん にいせっぽう
Ô I BI SHA MON SHIN TO KU DO SHA SO KU GEN BI SHA MON SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need Vaishravana to be saved, immediately he becomes Vaishravana and preaches the Law for them.

應以小王身。 得度者。即現小王身。而為説法。
おういしょうおうとくどしゃ そくげんしょうおうしん にいせっぽう
Ô I SHÔ Ô TO KU DO SHA SOKU GEN SHÔ Ô SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need a petty king to be saved, immediately he becomes a petty king and preaches the law for them.

応(or 應)以長者身。得度者。即現長者身。而為説法
おういちょうじゃしん そくげんちょうじゃしん にいせっぽう
Ô I CHÔ JA SHIN SO KU GEN CHÔ JA SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need a rich man to be saved, immediately he becomes a rich man and preaches the Law for them.

應以居士身 得度者。即現居士身。而為説法。
おういこじしん とくどしゃ そくげんこじしん にいせっぽう 
Ô I KO JI SHIN TO KU DO SHA SO KU GEN KO JI SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need a householder to be saved, immediately he becomes a householder and preaches the Law for them.

応以宰官身。得度者。即現宰官身。而為説法。
おういさいかんしん とくどしゃ そくげんさいかんしん にいせっぽう
Ô I SAI KAN SHIN TO KU DO SHA SOKU GEN SAI KAN SHIN NI I SEP PO
If they need a chief minister to be saved, immediately he becomes a chief minister and preaches the Law for them.

應以婆羅門身 得度者。即現婆羅門身。而以説法。
おういばらもんしんとくどしゃ そくげんばらもんしん にいせっぽう
ÔI SAI KAN SHIN TOKU DO SHA SOKU GEN SAIKAN SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need a Brahman to be saved, immediately he becomes a Brahman and preaches the Law for them.

應以比丘。比丘尼。優婆塞。優婆夷身得度者。即現比丘。
おういびく びくに うばそく うばいしんとくどしゃ そくげんびく
Ô IBI KU BI KU NI U BA SO KU U BAI SHIN TO KU DO SHA SO KU GEN BI KU
比丘尼。優婆塞。優娑夷身。而為説法。
びくに うばそく うばいしん にいせっぽう 
BI KU NI U BA SO KU U BAI SHIN NI I SEPPÔ 
If they need a monk, a nun, a layman believer, or a laywoman believer and preaches the Law for them.

應以長者。居士。 宰官 婆羅門婦女身 得度者。即現婦女身。而為説法。
おういちょうじゃ こじ さいかんばらもんぶみょしんとくどしゃ そくげんぶじょしん にいせっぽう
Ô ICHÔ JA KO JI SAI KAN BA RA MON BU MYO SHIN TO KU DO SHA SO KU GEN BU JO SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need the wife of a rich man, of a householder, a chief minister, or a Brahman to be saved, immediately he becomes those wives and preaches the Law for them.

應以童男 童女身 得度者。即現童男童女身。而為説法。
おういどうなんどうにょしんとくどしゃ そくげんどうなんどうにょしん にいせっぽう
ÔIDÔ NAN DÔ NYO SHIN TO KU DO SHA SO KU GEN DÔ NAN DÔ NYO SHIN NI I SEPPÔ
If they need a young boy or a young girl and preaches the Law for them.

應以天。龍。夜叉。乾闥婆。阿脩羅。
おういてん りゅう やしゃ けんだつば あしゅら
ÔITEN RYÛ YA SHA KEN DATSU BA A SHU RA
迦樓羅。緊那羅。摩睺羅伽人非人等身得度者。
かるら きんなら まごらがにんぴにんとうしんとくどしゃ
KA RU RA KIN NARA MA GO RA GAN IN PI NIN TÔ SHIN TO KU DO SHA
即皆現之。而為説法。
そっかいげんし にいせっぽう 
SOKKAI GEN SHI NI I SEPPÔ
If they need a heavenly being, a dragon, a yaksha, a gandharva, an asura, a garuda, a kimnara, a mahoraga, a human or a nonhuman being to be saved, immediately he becomes all of these and preaches the Law for them.

應以執金剛神得度者。即現金剛神。而為説法。
おういしゅうこんごうしんとくどしゃ そくげんしゅうこんごうしん にいせっぽう 
 Ô ISHÛ KON GÔ SHIN TO KU DO SHA SO KU GEN SHÛ KON GÔ SHIN NI I SEPPÔ 
If they need a vajra-bearing god and preaches the Law for them.

無盡意。是観世音菩薩。 成就如是功徳。以種種形。遊諸國土。度脱衆生。
むじんに ぜかんぜおんぼさつ じょうじゅうにょぜくどく いしゅじゅぎょう ゆしょこくど どだっしゅじょう
MU JIN NI ZE KANZEON BOSATSU JÔ JÛ NYO ZE KU DO KU I SHU JU GYÔ YU SHO KO KU DO DO DASSHU JÔ
Inexhaustible Intent, this Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds has succeeded in acquiring benefits such as these and. Taking on a variety of different forms, goes about among the lands saving living beings.

是故汝等。應當一心供養観世音菩薩。
ぜこにょとう おうとういっしんくようかんぜおんぼさつ
ZE KO NYO TÔ Ô TÔ I SSHIN KU YÔ KANZEON BOSATSU
Therefore you should all single-mindedly make offerings to Guanshiyin Bodhisattva.

是観世音菩薩摩訶薩。於怖畏急難之中。能施無畏。
かんぜおんぼさつまかさつ おふいきゅうなんしちゅう のうせむい
KANZEON BOSATSU MA KA SATSU O FU I KYÛ NAN SHI CHÛ NÔ SE MUI
Guanshiyin Bodhisattva Mahasattva can, in the midst of fear, crisis, and hardship, bestow fearlessness.

是故士娑婆世界。皆號之為 施無畏者。無盡意菩薩。白佛言。世尊。
ぜこししゃばせかい かいごうしいせむいしゃ むじんにぼさつ びゃくぶつごん せそん
ZE KO SHI SHA BA SE KAI KAI GÔ SHII SE MU I SHA MU JIN NI BOSATSU BYA KU BUTSU GON SE SON
That is why in this saha world everyone calls him Bestower of Fearlessness. Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent said to the Buddha,

我今當供養観世音菩薩。即解經衆寶珠瓔珞。
がこんとうくようかんぜおんぼさつ そくげきょうしゅほうじゅようらく
GA KON TÔ KU YÔ KANZEON BOSATSU SO KU GE KYÔ SHU HÔ JU YÔ RA KU
World-Honored One, now I must offer alms to Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds.

價直百千兩金。而以與之。作是言。仁者。 受此法施。 珍寶瓔珞。
げぢきひゃくせんりょうごん にいよし さぜごん じゅしほうせ ちんぽうようらく 
GE JI KI HYAKU SEN RYÔ GON NI I YOSHI SA ZE GON JU SHI HÔ SE CHIN PÔ YÔ RAKU
Then he took from his neck a necklace adorned with numerous precious gems, worth a hundred or a thousand taels of gold, and presented it to [the bodhisattva], saying, Sir, please accept this necklace of precious gems as a gift in the Dharma.

時観世音菩薩。不肯受之。
じかんぜおんぼさつ ふこうじゅし 
 JI KANZEON BOSATSU FU KÔ JU SHI 
At that time Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds was unwilling to accept the gift.

無盡意。復白観世音菩薩言。
むじんに ぶびゃくかんぜおんぼさつごん
MU JIN NI BU BYAKU KANZEON BOSATSU GON 
Inexhaustible Intent spoke once more to Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, saying,

仁者。愍我等故。受此瓔珞。
 にんしゃ みんがとうこ じゅしようらく
NIN SHA MIN GA TÔKO JU SHI YÔ RAKU
Sir, out of compassion for us, please accept this necklace.

爾時。佛告 観世音菩薩。
にじ ぶつごうかんぜおんぼさつ 
NIJI BUTSU GÔ KANZEON BOSATSU 
Then the Buddha said to Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds,

當愍此無盡意菩薩。 及四衆。天。龍。夜叉。乾闥婆。阿脩羅。
とうみんしむじんにぼさつ ぎゅうししゅ てん りゅう やしゃ けんだつば あしゅら
TÔ MIN SHI MU JIN NI BOSATSU GYÛ SHI SHU TEN RYÛ YA SHA KEN DA TSU BA A SHU RA
Out of compassion for this Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and for the four kinds of believers, the heavenly kings, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras,

迦樓羅。緊那羅。摩睺羅伽。人非人等故。受是瓔珞。
かるら きんなら まごらが にんぴにんとうこ じゅぜようらく
KARURA KINNARA MAGO RAGA NIN PIN IN TÔKO JU ZE YÔ RAKU
garudas, kimnaras, mahoragas, human and nonhuman beings, you should accept this necklace.

即時観世音菩薩。愍諸四衆。及於天。龍。人非人等。受其瓔珞。
そくじかんぜおんぼさつ みんしょししゅ ぎゅうおてん りゅう にんぴにんとう じゅごようらく
SO KU JI KANZEON BOSATSU MIN SHO SHI SHU GYÛ O TEN RYÛ NIN PIN IN TÔ JU GO YÔ RAKU 
Thereupon Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, having compassion for the four kinds of believers and the heavenly beings, dragons, human and nonhuman beings and the others, accepted the necklace and,
 
分作二分。一分奉釋迦牟尼佛。一分奉多寶塔。
ぶんさにぶん いちぶんぶしゃかむにぶつ いちぶんぶたほうぶっとう
BUN SA NI BUN I CHI BUN BU SHA KA MU NI BUTSU I CHI BUN BU TA HÔ BUTTÔ 
dividing it into two parts, presented one part to Shakyamuni Buddha and presented the other to the tower of the Buddha Many Treasures.

無盡意。観世音菩薩。有如是自在神力。遊於娑婆世界。
むじんに かんぜおんぼさつ うにょぜじざいじんりき ゆうおしゃばせかい
MU JIN NI KANZEON BOSATSU U NYO ZE JI ZAI JIN RI KI YÛ O SHA BA SE KAI
[The Buddha said,] Inexhaustible Intent, these are the kinds of freely exercised supernatural powers that Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds displays in his comings and goings in the saha world.

爾時無盡意菩薩。以偈問曰。
にじむじんにぼさつ いげもんわつ
NI JI MU JIN NI BOSATSU I GE MON WATSU
At that time Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent posed this question in verse form:

妙法蓮華経観世音菩薩普門品偈

Wonderful-Dharma-Lotus-Flower-Sutra: Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva -
All-Sidedness (in Overcoming Anxiety-Hindrances).

世尊妙相具 我今重問彼
せそんみょうそうぐ がこんじゅうもんぴ
SE SON MYO SO GUN
World-Honored One replete with wonderful features,
GA KON JU MON PI
Again, I want to ask you something

仏子何因縁 名為観世音
ぶつしがいんねん みょういかんぜおん
BUSSHI GA IN NEN
By which karma the child of Buddha
MYO I KAN ZE ON
Called Kanzeon (Kannon) (is named Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds?)

具足妙相尊 偈答無尽意
ぐそくみょうそうそん げとうむじんに
GU SOKU MYO SO SON
The honored One endowed with wonderful features
GE TO MU JIN NI
Buddha Shakyamuni answers to the bodhissattva Mujinni :

汝聴観音行 善応諸方所
にょちょうかんのんぎょう ぜんのうしょほうしょ
NYO CHO KAN NON GYO
Please, listen the practice of Kannon
ZEN NO SHO HO SHO
Which, quickly is realized everywhere

弘誓深如海 歴却不思議
ぐぜいじんにょかい りゃくこうふしぎ
GU ZEI JIN NYO KAI
His vows are deeper than the deeper ocean
RYAK KO FU SHI GI
And for eternity we will not be able to conceive it

侍多千億仏 発大清浄願
じたせんのくぶつ ほつだいしょうじょうがん
JI TA SEN NOKU BUTSU
With the help of all numerous buddhas
HO TSU DAI SHO JO GAN
It creates pur wills

我為汝略説 聞名及見身
がいにょりゃくせつ もんみょうぎゅうけんしん
GA I NYO RYAKU SETSU
For you I will explain it
MON MON GYU KEN SHIN
Listening his name, watching his body

心念不空過 能滅諸有苦
しんねんふくうか のうめつしょうく
SHIN NEN FU KU KA
By concentrating my spirit without let pass anything vainly
NO METSU SHO U KU
It is possible then to make disappear a lot of sufferings (for he can wipe out the pains of existence.)

仮使興害意 推落大火坑
けしこうがいい すいらくだいかきょう
KE SHI KO GAI I
Even if we suffer a lot of persecutions
SUI RAKU DAI KA KYO
If someone push us into a big fire, bigger than the hell

念彼観音力 火坑変成池
ねんぴかんのんりき かきょうへんじょうち
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate all your energy on the power of Kannon
KA KYO HEN JO CHI
The pit of fire will change into a pond!

惑漂流巨海 龍魚諸鬼難
わくひょうるこかい りゅうごしょきなん
WAKU HYO RU KO KAI
If you should be cast adrift on the vast ocean,
RYU GYO SHO KI NAN
menaced by dragons, fish and various demons,

念彼観音力 波浪不能没
ねんぴかんのんりき はろうふのうもつ
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate all your energy on Kannon power
HA RO FU NO MUTSU
The waves will not disturb you and the devils will let you go in peace (and the billows and waves cannot drown you!)

惑在須弥峯 為人所推堕
わくざいしゅみぶ いにんしょすいだ
WAKU ZAI SHU MI BU
If you are on the top of the Sumi mountain (Suppose you are on the peak of Mount Sumeru)
I NIN SHO SUI DA
And someone push you on the crater (and someone pushes you off.)

念彼観音力 如日虚空住
ねんぴかんのんりき にょにちこくうじゅう
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate all your energy on Kannon power
NYO NICHI KOKU JU
You will be like the Sun on the Sky (and you will hang in midair like the sun!)

惑彼悪人逐 堕落金剛山
わくひあくにんちく だらくこんごうせん
WAKU HI AKU NIN CHIKU
If you are persecuted by evil persons
DA RAKU KON GO SEN
And are falling down in front of Kongo mountain (who wish to throw you down from a diamond mountain.)

念彼観音力 不能損一毛
ねんぴかんのんりき ふのうそんいちもう
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate yourself on the power of Kannon
FU NO SON ICHI MO
You will even not lose a single hair (and they cannot harm a hair of you!)

惑値怨賊繞 各執刀加害
わくちおんぞくにょう かくしゅとうかがい
WAKU CHI ON ZOKU NYO
If you are surrender by thiefs, killers or rascals
KAKU SHU TOKA GAI
And if one of them has a sword and his threatening you

念彼観音力 咸即起慈心
ねんぴかんのんりき げんそくきじしん
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate yourself to the power of Kannon
"GEN SOKU KI JI SHIN
Each one of them will become compassionate

惑遭王難苦 臨刑欲寿終
わくそうおうなんく りんぎょうよくじゅしゅう
WAKU SO O NAN KU
If you suffer the disgrace of the emperor (or the authorities)
RIN GYO YOKU JU SHU
And military peoples bring you to the scaffold

念彼観音力 刀尋段段壊
ねんぴかんのんりき とうじんだんだんね
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate yourself to the power of Kannon
TO JIN DAN DAN NE
The sword of the executor will smash into 1000 pieces (and the executioner's sword will be broken to bits!)

惑囚禁枷鎖 手足被紐械
わくしゅきんかさ しゅそくひちゅうかい
WAKU SHU KIN KA SA
If you are put in jail, the neck encircle tightly on a piece of iron collar
SHU SOKU HI CHU KAI
Hands and feet attached (hands and feet bound by fetters and chains.)

念彼観音力 釈然得解脱
ねんぴかんのんりき しゃくねんとくげだつ
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate yourself on the power of Kannon
SHAKU NEN TOKU GE DATSU
Quickly you will obtain total freedom (and they will fall off, leaving you free!)

呪詛諸毒薬 所欲害身者
しゅそしょどくやく しょよくがいしんじゃ
SHU SO SHO DOKU YAKU
If someone bewitch you or poison you )Suppose with curses and various poisonous herbs)
SHO YOKU GAI SHIN JA
Or want to persecute you

念彼観音力 還著於本人
ねんぴかんのんりき げんやくおほんにん
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
If you concentrate yourself on the power of Kannon
GEN YAKU O HON NIN
Those malevolances will return to those who perpetuate it

惑遇悪羅刹 毒龍諸鬼等
わくぐあくらせつ どくりゅうしょきとう
WAKU GU AKU RA SETSU
If you meet devils spirits who eat people
DOKU RYU SHO KI TO
Or the killer dragon or several others devils

念彼観音力 時悉不敢害
ねんぴかんのんりき じしつぶかんがい
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate yourself to the power of Kannon
JI SHITSU BU KAN GAI
Exactly, nothing will harm you (and then none of them will dare to harm you.)

若悪獣囲繞 利牙爪可怖
にゃくあくじゅういにょう りげそうかふ
NYAKU AKU JU I NYO
If you are surrender by dangerous animals
RIGE SO KA FU
And their teeth and clawes terrorize you

念彼観音力 疾走無辺方
ねんぴかんのんりき しつそうむへんぼう
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate yourself on the power of Kannon
SHISSO MU HEN PO
Thoses animals will escape for ever

玩舵及蝮蝎 気毒煙火燃
がんじゃぎゅうぶつかく きどくえんかねん
GAN JA GYU BUK KATSU
If you are bitten by a mortal snake : viper, naga or scorpion
KE DOKU ENKA NEN
And their poison burns you deeply

念彼観音力 尋声自回去
ねんぴかんのんりき じんしょうじえこ
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate yourself on the power of Kannon
JIN SHO JI E KO
By the sound of this sutra, they will escape

雲雷鼓掣電 降雹樹大雨
うんらいくせいでん ごうばくじゅだいう
UN RAI KU SEI DEN
If the thunder ring out and lightings spurt out everywhere (If clouds should bring thunder, and lightning strike,)
GO BAKU JU DAI U
If the rain hail or if it is raining torrentially (if hail pelts or drenching rain comes down,)

念彼観音力 応時得消散
ねんぴかんのんりき おうじとくしょうさん
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate yourself on the power of Kannon
O JI TOKU SHO SAN
Quickly, everything will stop (and at that moment they will vanish away.)

衆生被困厄 無量苦逼身
しゅうじょうひこんにゃく むりょうくひつしん
SHU JO HI KON YAKU
When heavy difficulties or accidents appears on sensitives beings (If living beings encounter weariness or peril,)
MU RYO KU HIS SHIN
And if infinites sufferings assault his body (immeasurable suffering pressing them down,)

観音妙智力 能救世間苦
かんのんみょうちりき のうくせけんく
KAN NON MYO CHI RIKI
Then the splendid power of Kannon
NO KU SE KEN KU
Can save all sufferings beings from the social world (can save them from the sufferings of the world.)

具足神通力 広修智方便
ぐそくじんつうりき こうしゅうちほうべん
GU SOKU JIN ZU RIKI
Perfect in supernatural powers, (He is endowed with transcendental powers)
KO SHU CHI HO BEN
Widely practiced in wisdom and tact, (and widely practices the expedient means of wisdom.)

十方諸国土 無刹不現身
じつぽうしょこくど むせつふげんしん
JIP-PO SHO KOKU DO
Throughout the lands in the ten directions
MU SETSU FU GEN SHIN
there is no region where he does not manifest himself.

種種諸悪趣 地獄鬼畜生
しゅじゅしょあくしゅ じごくきちくしょう
"SHU JU SHO AKU SHU
In many different kinds of evil circumstances,
JI GOKU KI CHIKU SHO
in the realms of hell, hungry spirits or beasts,

生老病死苦 以漸悉令滅
しょうろうびょうしく いぜんしつりょうめつ
SHO RO BYO SHI KU
the sufferings of birth, old age, sickness and death
I ZEN SHITSU RYO METSU
All by degrees are ended by him. (all these he bit by bit wipes out.)

真観清浄観 広大智慧観
しんかんしょうじょうかん こうだいちえかん
SHIN KAN SHO JO KAN
True regard, serene regard, (He of the true gaze, the pure gaze,)
KO DAI CHI E KAN
Far-reaching wise regard, (the gaze of great and encompassing wisdom,)

悲観及慈観 常願常瞻仰
ひかんぎゅうじかん じょうがんじょうせんごう
HI KAN GYU JI KAN
Regard of pity, compassionate regard, (the gaze of pity, the gaze of compassion)
JO GAN JO SEN GO
Ever longed for, ever looked for ! (constantly we implore him, constantly look up in reverence.)

無垢清浄光 慧日破諸闇
むくしょうじょうこう えにちはしょあん
MU KU SHO JO KO
Pure and serene in radience, (His pure light, free of blemish,)
E NI CHI HA SHO AN
Wisdom's sun destroying darkness, (is a sun of wisdom dispelling all darknesses.)

能伏災風火 普明照世間
のうぶくさいふうか ふみょうしょうせけん
NO BUKU SAI FU KA
Subduer of woes of storm and fire, (He can quell the wind and fire of misfortune)
FU MYO SHO SE KEN
Who illumines all the world (and everywhere bring light to the world.)

悲体戒雷震 慈意妙大雲
ひたいかいらいしん じいみょうだいうん
HI TAI KAI RAI SHIN
Law of pity, thunder quivering, (The precepts from his compassionate body shake us like thunder,)
JI I MYO DAI UN
Compassion wondrous as a great cloud, (the wonder of his pitying mind is like a great cloud.)

樹甘露法雨 滅除煩悩炎
じゅかんろほうう めつじょぼんのうえん
JU KAN RO HO U
Pouring spiritual rain like nectar,
METSU JO BON NO EN
Quenching the flames of distress

諍訟経官処 怖畏軍陣中
じょうしょうきょうかんしょ ふいぐんじんちゅう
JO SHO KYO KAN SHO
When law suits bring you before the officials,
FU I GUN JIN CHU
Or in fear in battle's array, (when terrified in the midst of an army,)

念彼観音力 衆怨悉退散
ねんぴかんのんりき しゅうおんしつたいさん
NEN PI KAN NON RIKI
Exactly, if you concentrate all your energy on Kannon power
SHU ON SHIT-TAI SAN
All his enemies will be routed. (and hatred in all its forms will be dispelled.)

妙書観世音 梵音海潮音
みょうしょかんぜおん ぼんのんかいちょうおん
MYO ON KAN-ZE-ON
His is the wondrous voice, voice of the world-regarder,
BON-NON KAI CHO ON
Brahma-voice, voice of the rolling tide,

勝彼世間音 是故須常念
しょうひせけんのん ぜこしゅじょうねん
SHO HI SE KEN-NON
Voice all world-surpassing, (they surpass those sounds of the world;)
ZE KO SHU JO NEN
Therefore ever to be kept in mind, (therefore you should constantly think on them)

念念勿生疑 観世音浄聖
ねんねんもつしょうぎ かんぜおんじょうしょう
NEN NEN MOS-SHO GI KAN-ZE-ON JO SHO
With never a doubting thought. Perceiver of the World's Sounds, pure and holy,

於苦悩死厄 能為作依怙
おくのうしやく のういさえこ
O KU NO SHI YAKU NO I SA E KO
In pain, distress, death, calamity, Able to be a sure reliance, (to those in suffering, in danger of death, he can offer aid and support.)

具一切功徳 慈眼視衆生
ぐいっさいくどく じげんししゅうじょう
GU IS-SAI KU DOKU JI GEN JI SHU JO
Perfect in all merit, With compassionate eyes beholding all, (Endowed with all benefits, he views living beings with compassionate eyes.)

福聚海無量 是故応頂礼
ふくじゅかいむりょう ぜこおうちょうらい
FUKU JU KAI MU RYO ZE KO O CHO RAI
Boundless ocean of blessings Prostrate let us revere him (The sea of his accumulated blessings is immeasurable; therefore you should bow your head to him!)

3rd Part
爾時。持地菩薩。即從座起。前白佛言。
にじ じちぼさつ そくじゅうざき ぜんびゃくぶつごん
NI JI JI CHI BOSATSU SO KU JÛ ZA KI ZEN BYA KU BUTSU GON 
At that time the Bodhisattva Earth Holder immediately rose from his seat, advanced, and said to the Buddha,

世尊。若有衆生。聞是観世音菩薩品。自在之業。普門示現。神通力者。
せそん にゃくうしゅじょう もんぜかんぜおんぼさつほん じざいしごう ふもんじげん じんづうりきしゃ
SE SON NYAKU U SHU JÔ MON ZE KANZEON BOSATSU HON JI ZAI SHI GÔ FU MON JI GEN JIN ZÛ RI KI SHA 
World-Honored One, if there are living beings who hear this chapter on Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, on the freedom of his actions, his manifestation of a universal gateway, and his transcendental powers,

當知是人。功徳不少。
とうちぜにんくどくふしょう
TÔ CHI ZEN IN KU DO KU FU SHÔ
it should be known that the benefits these persons gain are not few!

仏説是普門品時。衆中八萬四千衆生。
ぶっせつぜふもんほんじ しゅちゅうはちまんしせんしゅじょう
BUSSETSU ZE FU MON HON JI SHU CHÛ HACHI MAN SHI SEN SHU JÔ
When the Buddha preached this chapter on the Universal Gateway, a multitude of eighty-four thousand persons in the assembly
